It's the 1960s and seventeen-year-old Rose falls hard for David, a rebel with a criminal record. His bad-boy charm soon overwhelms her...resulting in a shocking pregnancy. Unable to take responsibility for his actions, David joins the Marines and disappears.
Rose tries to stay on track, but life in the Milwaukee projects is tough. Adoption seems like the best choice for both her and her baby—and the hardest decision Rose will ever make.
Time passes. A child grows to an adult. Now twenty years old, Ann never knew why her birth parents gave her up. Did they care? Was she nothing but an inconvenience? The questions were always there, despite being raised in a loving household by caring adoptive parents.
Meanwhile, Ann's biological mother marries and has two more children. Her deadbeat biological father rises through the military to reach a rank of power and importance. And a mother and child search for each other—neither knowing what emotions their meeting might ignite.
A stirring and emotional debut novel, Misbegotten explores the struggles, joys, and imperfections of a mother and her daughter over thirty remarkable years.

Inspiring Adoption Story, Told From All SidesThe book Misbegotten by Josephine Goldman is an extremely interesting perspective on adoption from all possible angles. It is told through the lenses of several participants in an adoption story that follows one family through four generations.
You will get to know well the woman who gave up her daughter for adoption when she was only 17 after a heartbreaking relationship with her high school boyfriend. You are witness to their sad and complicated lives as they grow up in the projects in Milwaukee. You will become close to these characters as you empathize with the sad lives they live, in homes of two different dysfunctional families. Luckily for Ann, the main character in the book, she was given up for adoption or you are sure that the cycle of poverty and sadness would have been hers to share.
Ann was selected as the fourth adopted child in a wonderful, caring and positive family of considerable means. She tells her stories of eight years in a Catholic grade school, followed by four years of high school in two different beautiful homes in Wisconsin. Her father was an architect and her mother was a stay-at-home Mom during Ann's first five years.
There is a lot of suspense in the book as you wait to find out what happens to her biological Mom and Dad. There is intense love shown both between her biological parents, between Ann and her adopted family and even in the end between Ann and her biological Mom.
It is a wonderful story that will keep you interested and emotionally involved as you quickly read through to find out the end! I highly recommend this book for book clubs as there are many different characters that could be analyzed.

Misbegotten Josephine Goldman 9781516843114 Books Reviews
Having been a social worker who worked with young, unweds who placed their babies for adoption, the author, personally known to me, does an excellent portrayal of the difficult decisions that these mothers have to make. I could hardly put this book down and am recommending it to my book club.

I was really bothered with how the Marine Corps was portrayed. David would have never made it to the rank of general without education. I had a hard time with this non researched plot line.
This book had a great first half. The second half with Ann's journal got a little slow but everything was resolved in the end.
The story had a lot of potential. Unfortunately the writer missed many of her opportunities to make this an exciting, page-turning read. She spent a lot of time repeating things her characters had thought or explained a page or two before. (e.g. The character would think something and then say the exact same thing out loud.) Hopefully she'll continue to write and get better after a few more books.
Such a tear jerker. Excellent story about adoption. The only thing I didn't like was that the main character got divorced at one point in the story but no reason was ever given for the divorce and the father of her two children was never mentioned again.
What a captivating book set in our home town. The story is engaging and trying to figure out the characters and who they might be disappeared as I was drawn into the story of teen pregnancy, secrets, joy and the wonderful upbringing of that beautiful baby girl. Plot twists and turns develop. I commend Josephine Goldman for her strength and bravery to share her story. Her love for her parents is obvious and touched my heart.
The base story is good. It needs a lot more depth. A five year old keeping a diary in such detail is unlikely or more likely not likely at all. For such an emotional story the characters lacked depth.
